When Allied forces landed in normandy in June 1944 there began a series of campaigns that ended in the crossing of the Rhine and the fall of Hitler. Titanic battles, such as the breakout from Normandy, the parachute drops at Arnhem and the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes, pitted western forces againts the experienced German Wehrmacht.
